Harriet Island Regional Park – Summers are a great time for lunchtime picnics or for taking a walk through this park. It’s an “island getaway” right in the heart of downtown. The biggest gathering at Harriet Island this year is taking place over the Fourth of July weekend. The 22nd Annual Taste of Minnesota, with five full days of free entertainment, great fireworks every evening, Cruz’n Classic Car show, and of course, the Market Place with over 100 vendors. Come be part of this summer’s celebration – It’s Free – It’s Fun - July 1-5, 2004.

Science Museum of Minnesota – Educational and fun. The Science Museum is located on 8 acres with fascinating exhibits throughout and features the Human Body Gallery, the Mississippi Gallery, the Dinosaurs and Fossils Gallery, Omnitheater, 3D laser show. For details click on: www.smm.org

Minnesota Children’s Museum – A museum like no other! Children have the opportunity to learn while having fun. Kid can explore galleries loaded with hands-on adventures. Crawl through the giant anthill. Come face–to–face with turtles and crawl under the 500–gallon aquarium. Visit the lodge, curl–up with a good book by the stone fireplace, create a boisterous thunderstorm, or stop by the animal care facility and learn about snakes. Landmark Center – This has been St. Paul’s public landmark building for over 100 years. First it was a federal courts building, then the main post office. In the 1970’s this landmark was spared destruction by a group of citizens determined to save this building a restore it to its previous grandeur. In 1978 it was designated a National Historic Monument and opened to the public. Today this grand landmark is the center for music, theater, dance, exhibitions and numerous special events. Bronze PEANUTS statues in Landmark Plaza – Landmark Plaza is the home to St Paul’s several “life-size” Peanuts characters created as a tribute to Minnesota native Charles Schultz, the creator of PEANUTS comic strip and characters. Several statues have been placed in various locations in St. Paul, but the most popular are located here. “Life-size” bronze statues of Charlie Brown and Snoopy resting together under a tree, another one with Lucy batting her eyes at Schroeder over a piano, and another of Sally and Linus enjoying a sunny day together.

Como Zoo & Conservatory – Located just west of the intersections of Lexington Parkway and Horton Ave. in Como Park. 651-487-8200

Real Estate Tips
Tax Considerations >Tax Rewards for Homeowners

The Federal Tax Code has significantly improved the American taxpayer's ability to profit by selling a principal residence. Prior to 1997, homeowners could take advantage of a tax benefit termed the "rollover", which granted exemption from capital gains taxes on the net profit from the sale of a home. Homeowners who used profits to purchase a bigger and better home did not have to pay tax. And homeowners over the age of 55 were given a once-in-a-lifetime exclusion from taxes on profits of up to $125,000 on the sale of their principal residence.

Compare those tax breaks with our current, streamlined and potentially more profitable arrangement that replaced both the rollover and the one-time exemption. If you are a married home-seller filing jointly, you may enjoy up to $500,000 in tax-free home sale profits, provided you have occupied the property as your principal residence during two of the last five years. Taxpayers who file singly get a $250,000 capital gains exclusion. Homeowners are eligible to exclude capital gains on the sale of a principal residence as often as once every two years.

The law allows capital gain exclusions whether you "buy up" to a more expensive home or "buy down" to a less expensive one. The tax-free dollars can be used in any way you want. Consult your tax advisor for detailed advice about your particular circumstance.
